Cycle Ride to the Amazing Formentor Lighthouse
Formentor Lighthouse is the northernmost point in Mallorca accessible without getting your feet wet. Situated atop the breathtaking Tramuntana Mountains, it offers a rewarding cycling route from Alcudia that typically takes around two hours, depending on your fitness level. The journey features some of the most picturesque scenery on the island. The steep inclines of the Tramuntana Mountains present a challenging ride, making the experience both demanding and fulfilling. On a clear day, from behind the lighthouse, you can enjoy a stunning view of Menorca as well.
The ride to Formentor Lighhouse and my bike.
The ride and my bike. I ride an E-bike, which features cycle assist, meaning I still need to pedal, but it certainly makes tackling the mountain climbs much easier. Starting the journey from Alcudia, the terrain is relatively flat until the ascent begins. This climb can be quite challenging, but reaching the summit rewards you with a stunning view. Additionally, there is a takeaway hut at the top where you can enjoy refreshments, At the top of the first climb “Formentor’ the view point there is a take away for a drink, then why not look at the views, you then can re-view on the mountain that youve just ridden up, be proud of yourself - you’ve done well , so far. So now it’s time to start agin.
Then it's downhill. What goes up must come down, and the descent is steep and swift, marked by numerous twists and turns that reveal breathtaking views along the way. As you pass the entrance to Formentor beach and the hotel, this is the end of the down hill de send- for now anyway. Then you prepare for another ascent that stretches on for what feels like miles. This climb, though less steep than the first, is significantly longer, and honestly it doesn’t seem to end but it’s definitely not as steep as the first climb.. but it offers a different challenge and stunning scenery at every turn, don’t forget to look at the views as this part, for me anyway is what’s it all about.
Increasingly, the journey features more mountains to conquer, with exhilarating uphill climbs followed by exhilarating downhill descents. Numerous refreshment stops allow for leisurely moments to admire the breathtaking views and capture memorable photographs through a picturesque tunnel. Eventually, the highlight arrives with the sight of the lighthouse, a rewarding destination. After a well-deserved rest, and rcharging of the battery! the return ride commences, but don’t under estimate the way back but it’s filled with joyful reflections of the adventure, Cyclists do this trip daily but PLEASE be careful as there are lots of accidents on this ride, It’s probably one of my favourite bike rides..
Final thoughts
The ride, while challenging even with an E-bike, is incredibly enjoyable. There is often a photographer on the hill ready to capture your moment, Remember to take food and drinks as the cafe at the lighthouse is a little pricy.. Enjoy the ride, take your time and look at the views.
When i arrived home i felt good that i’d achieved a good ride, a famous mountain ride,, The E-Bike rode extremily well even though i had to charge the battery before my return home, The Throttle on the bike whipped me up the worst but it was still a session on the bike.
